CURATIO - Public Art Project
Curatio (2008) is the most recent project by Mario Hergueta. The Curatio installation in the "Medizinische Klinik" in Mainz (Germany) propitiates an extraordinary conjunction of work and context. The artwork establishes a link between the building and it function as a hospital by transforming the ancient Greek Symbol: the rod of Asclepius into language - "Curatio" (latin for Healing). The rod of Asclepius symbolizes the healing arts by combining the serpent, which in shedding its skin is a symbol of rebirth and fertility, with the staff, a symbol of authority befitting the god of Medicine.
Curatio is a stainless steel rod measuring 13.5 meters with red letters entwined around it. The artwork is installed outside. Another transformation of the word Curatio ist placed in the public foyer.
